ITC Grants Channel 5 Licence
The Independent Television Commission has today confirmed the grant of the licence to provide the Channel 5 television service to Channel 5 Broadcasting.
The ITC had awarded the licence in October subject to a further period of 12 weeks during which the technical details of the licence were finalised. The process was further delayed by the High Court challenge to the award of the licence to C5B in January by Virgin TV which subsequently failed.
Channel 5 should now start broadcasting on 1st January 1997 with coverage of approximately 70% of the UK. The licence makes it a binding commitment that C5B retune 90% of VCRs before broadcasting can begin. In cases where interference is caused, retuning must be completed within 14 days of the start of the Channel 5 service in the affected area.
