Government U-Turn On Teletext Rights

The amendment to The Broadcasting Bill ITV Companies Lobby For Teletext Rights which would have prohibited teletext advertising by ITV companies was abandoned yesterday by the government. The amendment would have prevented ITV franchise holders from selling any teletext advertising space in their regions with the effect of leaving Teletext Ltd with a near monopoly. The Department of National Heritage has confirmed that the amendment has been withdrawn due to constant pressure from the ITV groups.

Teletext Ltd, the company responsible for teletext on ITV and Channel 4, had already made the government aware that revenues were being taken away from them and had questioned whether the ITV franchises sales of teletext advertising space was consistent with Government policy.

The move was welcomed by ITV companies as they believed the Bill had favoured Teletext Ltd.
