Equity In Favour Of Deal

Members of Equity, the actors union, have voted in favour of making agreements with BBC and ITV for the sale of programmes to the cable and satellite network. The agreement gives actors a 17% royalty on the sale price of programmes.

Additionally, the union has negotiated large increases in minimum fees for programmes made for the main television channels. This may lead to popular old programmes replacing the steady influx of Australian and US programmes currently shown on non-terrestrial channels.

Sources say that BBC and ITV may be persuaded to sell programmes below the market rate and thereby cheat actors, but the deal will ensure that any disagreements will be heard by an independent arbiter.
