TV Viewing Round-up: August 2011

X Factor 2011

The X Factor topped the most-viewed programmes listings in August with more than 12 million viewers. The first episode of the new series with judges Gary Barlow, Kelly Rowland, Tulisa and Louis Walsh put ITV1 in the lead.

However, BBC One dominates the majority of the top programme rankings for the summer month, with New Tricks, Doctor Who and Ocean Giants.

Unusually, news programmes feature in the top 10 twice – the Ten O’Clock News and BBC News come in fourth and sixth position, as viewers tuned in to see coverage of the riots early in the month and on bank holiday Monday.

It was also a good month for the Harry Potter brand. In fifth place, BBC One’s Who Do You Think You Are? with JK Rowling attracted seven million viewers, while the films Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire banked 5.9 million viewers (on 6 August) and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix secured 5.5 million viewers (13 August) for ITV1.

The only other time ITV1 appeared in the top 20 listings for August was with All Star Family Fortunes, which attracted 5.8 million viewers on 20 August.

For the first time, Channel 5 entered the top 20 with Celebrity Big Brother. The launch show (on 18 August) won 5.2 million viewers and became one of Channel 5’s highest-rating programmes ever.
