Media Takeover Rumours

Speculation continues to mount over the possible takeover of media group Pearson. The latest candidate rumoured to be interested in Pearson, which owns the FT, Penguin books and Thames Television, is Viacom.

With revenues of more than $11bn, Viacom is now the world’s second largest media group after Time Warner. Analysts believe that the similarities between the companies make a merger a sound business proposition.

…Independent television group HTV is believed to be in talks with Carlton Communications which could lead to a merger. Any amalgamation of the companies would however have to wait for the Broadcasting Bill to make its way through Parliament.

Press rumours suggest that if Carlton did takeover HTV, it would cost them around £300 million. Carlton is currently capitalised at £262m. Carlton refused to confirm any deal was taking place.
