Broadcasting In British Cities
A number of television companies have applied to the ITC for two-year restricted service licences (RSLs) which will allow them to broadcast within British cities. The ITC has received 31 applications for RSLs which they take to be a strong indication of the desire for local community broadcasting.
A number of cities, including Leicester, will have to be competed for as more than one company has applied for the licence. The announcement of the awards is expected to happen early next year; the service generally starts within twelve weeks of the granting of the licence. The local services will pay £4,200 to use the frequencies set aside from the main broadcasters.
One new company, City TV, has applied for nine licences including Birmingham, Coventry, Cardiff, Leeds, Newcastle and Leicester.
