GetGlue – a US social TV startup, which is being seen as the leader in its field, has announced $12 million in new funding – partly via existing investors who include Time Warner.
GetGlue, which launched in 2009, has 2 million registered users, and claims to be “stickier than a lot of other services out there,” according to CEO Alex Iskold.
It works with 75 networks in the US and has been working with the BBC and Channel 4 in the UK. US pay network DirecTV uses GetGlue’s technology as its main screen social TV guide.
Iskold believes “it’s still very early to tell what exactly it’s going to look like, but we’re very confident personalisation is key”.
While GetGlue claims to be most focused on TV, users can also check-in music, books and games. GetGlue faces competition from the likes of Shazam and Zeebox – which itself announced funding, from BSkyB, this week.
