British Teenagers: The TV Fans of Europe

British Teenagers: The TV Fans of Europe

British Teenagers watch more TV than any other major European country. These are the key findings of a new survey called Teenagers Europe. The research, conducted by Euroquest MRB, explores young people’s hopes and fears, and attitudes and behaviour over over 10,000 interviewees in Britain, France, Italy and Germany. The study investigates 11-19 year-olds’ purchasing behaviour, media habits and attitudes across product fields, including both local and international brands.

Perhaps the most marked statistic to emerge from the study is that young people in Britain watch considerably more television than children from any other European country. On average British teenagers view 4 hours of television during the week, rising to 4 hours 20 minutes on a Saturday. The Germans only clock 2˝ hours, the French 3 hours and the Italians 3˝. The research also showed that British teenagers tend to live in multi-set households: 37% of teenagers live in homes with 4 or more TV sets, compared to Germany where nearly three in ten have access to only one TV set. And three quarters of British young people have a TV in their bedroom, versus a European average of 52%. The British are also the most likely to have a VCR in their bedrooms.

71% of British young people love watching TV and they also love the ads. Over 27% of young Brits enjoy watching commercials, considerably higher than the rest of Europe.
