Radio Authority Announces More Digital Details

The Radio Authority has said that it intends to advertise the national digital multiplex in March 1998, with guaranteed capacity for the three national commercial stations as well as five or six other services.

The advertisement of local digital licences will then get under way as soon as the mix of programme formats to be provided on the national service becomes clear. This is expected to be in Autumn 1998.

In terms of the distribution of local services, the RA intends at first to concentrate on the main population centres within the UK: these will be spread throughout the country and will include Greater London, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Bristol, Cardiff and Hull.

The first draft of the application forms for national and local multiplex licences are expected to be available by the end of 1997.
