Pub landlady wins TV football battle

Manchester City

Pub landlady Karen Murphy has won her court battle with the English Premier League over using a Greek TV decoder to screen football games.

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled partly in her favour in October and now the High Court in London has also found in her favour.

Instead of using Sky, which costs £700 a month to air Premier League matches, Murphy used the Greek TV station Nova, which has the rights to screen the games in Greece, for £800 a year.

A High Court judge today ruled that Murphy’s appeal over using the decoder must be allowed, though it was made clear that the other complex issues regarding the wider legality of screening matches would have to be decided “at a later date”.
