ITC Complaints Bulletin
The latest ITC complaint report has been published and complaints have been upheld against Lucozade NRG, the People newspaper and the Volkswagen Polo.
64 viewers complained about the recent advert for Lucozade NRG, with many saying that they felt the advert set a bad example for younger viewers and objected to the violent nature of the commercial. There were also complaints the advert was shown in or around children’s programming which many felt would be frightening for younger viewers.
The complaints made against the People newspaper by 25 viewers were based on the fact the advert featured references to sexual behaviour and included scenes of a scantily clad couple. Many complainants considered the advert inappropriate for the time it was shown, 8:50pm during a break in the film Ghostbusters II, considering this was when a family audience would be watching.
The advert for the Volkswagen Polo came in for criticism when 144 viewers complained about the commercial’s use of disturbing material involving violence and human suffering. The majority of complaints took exception to the kind of imagery used to sell a car.
