EU: EP Adopts Reports On Discrimination

The EP Committee on Women’s Rights has adopted reports by MEPs Ms Marie-Paule Kestelijn-Sierens (referring to the EC’s 1996 annual report on equal opportunities) and Ms Marlene Lenz (on discrimination against women in advertising). In the first report the committee criticised the annual report for being insufficiently analytical, called on the EC to take initiatives to help women develop their entrepreneurial role, and condemned the lack of measures among MS to promote women in decision-making fields. In the second report the committee invited advertising companies to demonstrate more creativity in advertising messages, giving more scope for the different roles played by women in society. It also called on advertisers to adopt minimum norms to combat discrimination in advertising.
