Broadcasting Standards Commission TV Violence Research

Research to be published by the Broadcasting Standards Council, the statutory body for standards and fairness in broadcasting, shows that two-thirds of adults questioned cited TV violence as their primary concern about broadcasting. This far outstrips the number of people who believe bad language or sexual content are of the greatest concern. The principal worry is the impact of violent scenes on children.

The five year long research shows that although 90% of adults are familiar with the 9pm watershed “there is a growing concern that the level of violence being screened from 7pm is unsuitable because much of it is in a domestic and realistic context.”
