Pay TV Football Worth £450m By 2003
Pay Per View football is forecast to bring in £450m of revenue a year by 2003/4, according to a new report from Fletcher Research and Oliver & Ohlbaum.
This sum is significantly less than previous predictions which had put the figure as a high as £2 billion on the basis that 10 million people would sign up to the service. Net Profits: How to Make Money Out of Football suggests that 2.5 million households will pay to watch individual football matches. If this were to happen BSkyB’s profits would be boosted by £100m per year.
The report goes on to say that PPV football will reduce attendance at some football clubs: big clubs will probably be unaffected, smaller clubs will lose up to 10% of their average attendance each month, and the worst hit will be the smallest, losing over 15%.
BSkyB is expected to launch PPV football in time for the 1999/2000 season.
