Outdoor Tobacco Spend Put At £20m

In the wake of yesterday’s announcement that the Government will be banning all advertising of tobacco, the Tobacco Manufacturers Association has said that the industry spent about £20 million on outdoor poster sites in 1996. This makes up the bulk of the estimated £56m tobacco spend across all media. The TMA also told Newsline that, according to figures from the IPA, £16m was spent in the national press, £12m in the consumer magazine industry and £8m on sports sponsorship.

While it is clear that the ban will certainly take place, it is not yet known for sure when the new Government will pass the legislation. It is believed that it will take some time to draw up a Bill to negotiate the problem of banning sponsorship without jeopardising the sports it supports.
