A new system of addresses for the Internet has been given the go ahead by a group of international representatives meeting in Geneva. The agreement means that the current single US company that can register Internet addresses will be replaced by an unlimited number of companies from across the globe. The number of names that can be used for Internet sites will also be doubled.
The new media agency AKQA is setting up an on-line media planning and buying department. As well as serving its existing clients, AKQA will also be seeking third-party business.
An independent report, carried out on behalf of BT, predicts that intranets will dwarf the Internet by the turn of the century. By the year 2000, the report claims, 4 out of every 10 British companies will be running a corporate intranet. However, the potential of intranets is still to be fully exploited by British organisations.
Demon Internet, the UK’s largest Internet service provider, is looking for a strategic investor; it has approached a number of blue chip companies about a possible partnership.
