TV Viewing Summary W/E 27/04/97

As the weather begins to turn for the better, so do our soap writers attempt more and more little twists to keep their audiences glued to the screen. Still, with an audience figure of 17.40 million for Monday’s Coronation Street being the high of the week, and the rest of the soaps chasing, it looks like the seasonal down turn which began a couple of weeks ago is now beginning to set in. Not even the excitement of Joe Wicks ‘losing it’ again in Eastenders has helped. This week Eastender’s has an average audience of 15.05 million, with Coronation Street attracting on average an audience of 15.10 million. Both of these reflect a fall in audience, with one clear exception; Sunday’s episode of Coronation Street has now settled down with the rest of the pack attracting 13.69 million viewers, and again holds it’s place in the top ten, vastly improving on its position over the last few months. It would seem that despite the ITC comments of alleged ‘soap overkill’, the fourth episode is certainly now more than justifying it’s place.

ITV are still leading the way with drama, in fact not a single drama offering from the BBC appears in this weeks top thirty programmes. It’s best these days is Hamish Macbeth, which was seen by only 7.22 million viewers this week – a definite fall on its previous figures. The BBC do in fact seem to be struggling a bit, right away across the board with ITV holding twenty out of the thirty places in the top ten.
