Labour May Lift Ban On BT TV
Chris Smith, the National Heritage Secretary, has indicated that he would consider lifting the ban on BT broadcasting TV programmes across its telephone network. In an interview given to the Independent Mr Smith apparently said that he would allow BT to compete with cable companies if the telecoms company pledged to connect schools, hospitals and libraries to the Internet for free. It is estimated that it would cost BT around £10bn to enter the TV market.
