Advertising’s next generation: Why we are creating the Future Leaders Network
Opinion | Future of Talent and Leadership Week in Focus

The Future Leaders Network will feed insights, lived experiences, and big ideas into broader industry discussions and programmes, says the AA’s commercial director.

I am sure that every generation of ad industry professionals believes it entered the industry during its most dynamic era. Yet for today’s rising talent in the UK advertising and media sector, the early years of a career look fundamentally different from those that came before.

While digital transformation and the pandemic’s impact have made work more flexible and execution more immediate, something precious has been subtly eroding: the chance to meet, debate, and collaborate with industry peers.

Previous generations learned the business through osmosis. They built informal networks within their own company and across agencies, media owners, and production houses over shared pitches, industry events, and serendipitous encounters.

Today, against a backdrop of hybrid working models, distributed teams, and a permacrisis including economic downturns and challenges, many young professionals operate in increasingly narrow silos.

They may excel at their immediate deliverables, but often they miss out on the broader cross-industry relationships that turn promising executives into visionary leaders.

Great advertising has always been fuelled by creative friction and collective intellect. Without cross-industry peer networks, our sector risks losing its shared culture, its cross-pollination of ideas, and its long-term leadership pipeline.

The stark results of the All In Census 2025 revealed that just 40% of the advertising workforce feel that advertising is trustworthy. Restoring faith and pride in our craft requires the active involvement of the rising generation who will shape the industry’s next chapter.

Our experience hosting the Media Business Course proves what happens when you create the right forum. Every year, when we bring young professionals together for an intensive, immersive dive into media strategy, planning and collaboration, the transformation is immediate.

Away from the routine of daily deadlines, delegates discover how their counterparts across rival agencies, media channels, or brands think and operate. More importantly, they realise they share the same challenges, ambitions, and uncertainties.

The bonds formed during those few days often endure for decades, creating a professional support network and industry knowledge that can shape entire careers.

Rising talent needs a permanent, sustained space

Seeing the profound impact of the Media Business Course made one thing abundantly clear: this kind of transformative peer collaboration cannot be a once-a-year anomaly.

Rising talent needs a permanent, sustained space to assemble, exchange perspectives, and build cross-disciplinary alliances as they ascend the leadership ladder. That is why we are creating the Future Leaders Network within the Advertising Association’s Front Foot membership.

It will serve as an active pipeline to shape the industry, feeding the network’s insights, lived experiences, and big ideas into broader industry discussions and programmes.

That is why, following the flagship LEAD 2027 conference, we are hosting a dedicated leadership event specifically for this group so that they can learn more about, question, and debate some of the industry’s biggest challenges and opportunities.

If UK advertising is to maintain its global reputation for world-class innovation and creativity, we must actively invest in the human infrastructure of our business.

Creating more opportunities for young talent to connect, collaborate, and lead together is not just good for business; it will help retain them and reinvigorate a sense of pride in what we do.
