The Telegraph Group recorded a 9% increase in pre-tax profits yesterday, rising to £44.3m with turnover also increasing from £219m to £237m. Operating profit went up by 14% to £37.5m and earnings per share decreased to 23.8p from 30.1p. The rise in profits is being partly accredited to a substantial increase in the cover price.

Pirate FM, Cornwall and West Devon’s new radio station, has announced a trading profit of £10,500 for its first six months in transmission. Company chairman, James St Aubyn, says “In the financial projections in our application document, we had not anticipated trading profitably until our second year of operation”.
