David Tomchak has been appointed as the Evening Standard’s new digital director of editorial.
In his new role, Tomchak will be responsible for all ES digital editorial and production staff and will report to managing director of digital, Zach Leonard.
Tomchak joins from Number 10 Downing Street, where he has led digital marketing for the Prime Minister and Cabinet Office and served as deputy director to the Government Communications Service since 2015. Prior to that he spent nearly a decade at the BBC.
The appointment is part of an ongoing investment and product development plan to maintain growth across ES’ two sites, standard.co.uk and homesandproperty.co.uk.
In January, the Evening Standard recorded the largest month-on-month increase in UK monthly page views amongst national newspaper websites (+23%), whilst delivering 42.7 million UK page views (up 42% year-on-year) – both new records, as reported by ABC.
Commenting on the appointment, Leonard said: “David’s expertise in broadcast, social media and audience development will bring brilliant new skills to the Standard’s digital journalism.
“The dynamics of digital publishing call for engaging ways to report news, which complement the successful formula of the newspaper – but also go beyond, to meet the demands of mobile consumers, increasingly reading and sharing on devices and often through visual and video media.”
Tomchak added: ” I am delighted to now be joining the team at the Evening Standard and look forward to helping them continue to build a truly global British brand, where world-class journalism, product development and audience insight are at its core.”
Tomchak will begin his new role in May.
