Google to cut 12,000 jobs

Alphabet, the parent company of Google, has announced it will cut 12,000 jobs, equivalent to about 6% of its workforce.

CEO Sundar Pichai told staff in a memo obtained by Reuters that he takes “full responsibility for the decisions that led us here” and that the company’s previous headcount expansion was done during “a different economic reality than the one we face today”.

The layoffs are the latest to hit the tech sector. Just yesterday, Microsoft announced it would lay off approximately 10,000 workers. Last year, Twitter, Meta, and Snap also each let go of thousands of employees.
