Maiden Expand Rail Business With New Account Wins

Maiden Outdoor has further strengthened its rail advertising business with two new account wins with the Go Ahead Group’s New Southern Railway and Thameslink subsidiaries.

The two-and-a-half year deal with New Southern Railway begins immediately and covers key commuter stations such as East Croydon, Brighton and Balham. The Thameslink deal also starts straight away and gives Maiden access to Blackfriars, City Thameslink and Kings Cross Thameslink.

Maiden has now renewed 75% of its rail franchise business, following earlier renewal successes with Network Rail, South Eastern Trains, First Great Western and National Express. Nine of the top ten TOC advertising franchises have now been competitively tendered in this franchise ’round’ of which Maiden has won eight.

Commenting on the new contracts, Maiden’s chief executive, Ron Zeghibe, said: “This latest TOC advertising win confirms Maiden’s strength in the rail advertising sector, where we have a great deal of experience in attracting Advertisers and developing new and innovative products.”

However, Maiden suffered a blow last month after rival Viacom Outdoor doubled its national rail advertising business by snatching the companies £9 million First Rail contract. The five-year contract represented a major coup for the company, giving it the exclusive rights to sell all outdoor poster formats on the full range of stations owned and operated by First Group Trains in the UK (see Viacom Doubles Rail Business With First Group Win).

Outdoor advertising has been performing well recently and the latest figures from the Advertising Association suggest the medium will enjoy a bumper year in 2005 with adspend expected to rise by a solid 6.9% as online retail, property and household brands continue to invest heavily in the sector (see UK Adspend Expected To Grow By 4.4% Next Year).
