ITV2 Secures Sponsor For Toon Army’s UEFA Matches

ITV2 has secured Northern Rock to sponsor its coverage of Newcastle United’s UEFA Cup games, beginning with the team’s first home outing against Dinamo Tibilisi on 4 November.

The finance brand will also sponsor Newcastle United’s away game against Sochaux on 25 November and the home game against Sporting Lisbon on 16 December.

The deal, which includes full broadcast sponsorship and a series of branded trailers on ITV2 and ITV3, was negotiated by Alison Wright at MediaVest Manchester, along with Elaine Roberts and Stewart Hunt at ITV Sales.

Stewart Hunt, senior sponsorship executive at ITV Sales, said: “This sponsorship deal is a fantastic association with ITV2’s sporting output. UEFA Cup football is a must for any football fan and this is a fantastic and targeted advertising opportunity for Northern Rock.”

David Henderson, director of advertising at Northern Rock, added: “This is a logical extension of the company’s involvement in sport and in particular as Newcastle United’s partner. I am sure everyone will have a laugh at our Romeo the Frog title credits.”

ITV recently secured all the home rights to Newcastle United’s UEFA Cup games and ITV2 has showed its support to the team by re-branding to ITV Toon on match days. ITV’s trademark blue and yellow colours have made way on screen for the black and white stripes of Newcastle.

ITV Sales will next week launch its long-awaited ‘Values of Fame’ marketing programme in an attempt to convince brands of the benefits of television advertising. The campaign will centre around the proposition that television is the medium that best guarantees advertisers the ability to build ‘brand fame’ (see ITV Launches Campaign To Boost Television Advertising).
