Newsquest Brings New Internet Boss Online

Local newspaper publisher Newsquest Media has announced the appointment of Roger Green as managing director of the company’s Digital Media department, giving him responsibility for the online operations of the UK’s second largest regional newspaper publisher.

Green joined Newsquest on 20 September having previously been managing director of Emap Online, a position he held for five years. The new post will see Green report to Paul Davidson, chairman and chief executive of Newsquest, from his base at the group’s head office in Weybridge, Surrey.

The move to Newsquest marks the latest move in Green’s 28-year career. Amongst his achievements with Emap he created and led a 35-strong team, receiving several top industry awards in the process. Internet magazine declared him as one of the UK’s most influential people in the internet industry in 2001, 1998 and 1997 and since leaving Emap he has acted as a consultant to British Waterways, developing the strategy and business plan for their website, Waterscape.com

The new role will see Green take charge of online operations at Newsquest which currently operated over 79 regional portal and newspaper websites, serving 16.5 million pages per month to 1.7 million distinct hosts supporting Newsquest’s portfolio of daily and weekly newspapers.

Newsquest’s newspapers have put in a relatively unimpressive performance as a whole over the last few months, with the publisher’s total circulation figure dropping by 35.1% year on year in the six months to June, losing nearly six million in real terms to a total of just over 10.8 million.
