Metro Finally Replaces Grant As Marketing Director

Metro, the Associated Newspaper-owned morning freesheet, has appointed Karen Wall as its new marketing director, filling the position left vacant following Linda Grant’s defection to Capital Radio last year.

The new role will see Wall assume responsibility for all Metro‘s consumer and trade marketing, with a specific brief to strengthen the paper’s relationship with its readers and increase its distribution.

Her immediate focus will be to oversee the launch of the paper’s first consumer advertising campaign and the roll-out of the paper in the East Midlands and Bristol. The ‘News at the speed of life’ campaign will launch in Newcastle in May and will later spread to other cities where Metro is distributed.

Commenting on the appointment Steve Auckland, managing director at Metro, said: “Metro has grown increasingly in stature since it’s launch and Karen has been a key part of that success. She has a real understanding of the Metro brand and concept, and is in many ways responsible for its current strength.”

He added: “With our circulation about to top a million, taking Metro to the 4th largest circulating newspaper in the UK, Karen’s promotion will further strengthen the Metro board and ensure that the brand continues to go from strength to strength.”

Wall was previously head of marketing and joined Metro as a media executive in 1999. Prior to joining Associated Newspapers, she was a marketing executive for Northcliffe Newspapers and a marketing assistant for Bank of Ireland Finance.

Wall replaces Linda Grant, who stepped down as Metro marketing director in 2002 to join Capital Radio as strategic marketing director. She was recently promoted to the position of commercial managing director, with responsibility for running the group’s national advertising sales business (see Capital Appoints Grant To Head National Ad Sales).
