Ofcom Offers FM Radio Licence In Ballymena

Ofcom has continued its programme of expansion for the UK’s radio industry today with the unveiling of a new FM licence for Ballymena in Northern Ireland and the surrounding area.

The watchdog estimates that the licence could achieve coverage of an area with an adult population of around 56,000, although the exact coverage of any broadcasts made would depend on the location of transmission equipment and other technical considerations. One frequency is being made available for the licence.

The licence will be issued for a twelve year period, with all applications published on Ofcom’s website soon after the closing date of 6 April. All applications for the licence will incur a non-refundable fee of £1,500.

Ofcom recently awarded the much sought after Edinburgh FM licence to Kelvin MacKenzie’s Wireless Group, which won a closely fought battle with its proposal for a 24-hour speech radio station dubbed Dunedin FM (see Wireless Group Scoops Edinburgh Radio Licence).
