BT Signs First Content Deals For IPTV Service

Broadband Cable Telecoms giant BT has announced the first content deals for its forthcoming IPTV service, signing up BBC Worldwide, Paramount and Warner Music Group to provide customers with films and TV programmes via their broadband connections.

The agreements precede the service’s launch next Autumn, allowing BT customers access to a range of on-demand film, music and television as well as interactive and communications services via a set-top box.

BT’s service operates with a conventional Freeview receiver, offering free-to-air channels supplemented by video on-demand content without the need for a monthly subscription fee.

Ian Livingston, CEO of BT Retail, welcomed the content deals, stating: “A partnership between the country’s leading communications company and three of the world’s leading entertainment groups is great news for consumers in the UK. I’m delighted BBC Worldwide, Paramount and Warner Group share our vision. Our customers will be able to enjoy enhanced TV services and easy access to a wealth of interactive content and new services straight to their TV. BT is defining next generation TV.”

John Smith, CEO of BBC Worldwide, added: “With video on demand rapidly shaping the future of television, we are very pleased to be part of BT’s TV service from the outset, providing subscribers with blue chip programmes and high quality viewing.”

The new service will go head to head with on-demand services from soon to be merged cable giants NTL and Telewest, as well as satellite giant BSkyB.

BT’s service will be the UK’s second IPTV-based system, following London-based HomeChoice, and employing Microsoft software to deliver high definition pictures and interactive services.
