Evans Extends BBC Presence With Radio 2 Drivetime

Chris Evans Chris Evans is to extend his role at BBC Radio 2, taking over the station’s weekday Drivetime show next month from long-time host Johnnie Walker.

Evans currently presents a show for the station on Saturday afternoons, having signed up in a dramatic on-stage announcement at last year’s Edinburgh Radio Festival. The move saw Evans return to radio after a six year absence (see Evans Signs With Radio 2 For Return To Radio).

Announcing his latest move, Evans said: “To take over the Drivetime time show from Johnnie Walker is an absolute honour. The guy is a legend, he’s also very special to me as he helped get me my first job at the BBC way back in 1990.

“As for the show itself Drivetime is hugely important. In many ways it mirrors the breakfast show as a transition for people between work and home. It’s our job to help that journey be less of a thing to dread and more of a thing to look forward to.”

Lesley Douglas, controller of Radio 2, added: “Johnnie Walker is a hard act to follow. Chris Evans is a brilliant radio talent who has already scored a hit with his weekend show and I know he will give the audience a great new show for weekdays.”

Evans will take the reigns of the Drivetime show on Tuesday 18 April, airing from 5.00-7.00pm.
