Emap Revamps Motor Title To Focus On Modern Classics

Emap Logo Emap’s 33 year old motoring magazine, Classic Cars, is to receive a revamp next month, with an editorial shift towards the next generation of classics.

The title launched in 1973, becoming the first magazine dedicated to older cars, but will now move towards coverage of more modern classics, such as the Lotus Elise, TVR Griffith, and Ferrari F355. The change is designed to encourage interest in classic motoring amongst more enthusiasts.

Editor Phil Bell explained the move, stating: “The new direction is about reconnecting with the reasons that guys are into distinctive, timeless cars. Our readers want to be different, they want to have fun, and they want to be part of a community of like-minded individuals. Classic Cars will define that community.”

Classic Cars has seen its circulation dip over the last five years, despite rises during 2002, at the beginning of 2004 and 2005. In the last ABC reporting period, covering July to December 2005, the title lost 8.9% of its circulation year on year. The magazine currently commands sales of 43,833.

Emap claims there is still a “huge following” for classic cars however, with the new look magazine planning features exploring the technology behind the cars, and further improvements to its buying and selling section.

Last month saw rival Haymarket’s What Car? magazine is branch out into television, with the launch of an on-demand channel through broadband and TV provider HomeChoice (see What Car? Shifts Into Video On Demand).
