The FA Premier League has awarded three of the six live television rights packages to BSkyB, announcing that a second round of bidding for the remaining three will now take place.
The second bids will decide which broadcasters can air the remaining 50% of Premier League coverage, although Sky remains eligible to bid, and could scoop a maximum of two more packages.
Other bidders believed to be interested in the rights are NTL:Telewest and BT, with the latter hoping to include the content on its forthcoming BT Vision platform (see BT Signs Music Content For On-Demand TV Service).
This morning’s win was seen by some investors as bad news for the satellite firm, with the company’s share price seeing a dip after it failed to secure the maximum legal amount of five packages in the first round of bidding.
