Maxim Editor Steps Down

Maxim Derek Harbinson, editor of Maxim, is to leave the role after just over a year in the hot-seat.

Harbinson, former editor of Loaded and deputy editor of Nuts, was appointed editor of the Dennis Publishing title last July, taking over from Greg Gutfield.

Like most of the magazines in the ever decreasing men’s sector, Maxim has seen its circulation decline over the past 18 months or so.

The latest ABC figures, for January to June 2007, show that Maxim has a circulation of almost 107,700, after a year on year decline of more than 38,500 copies (see ABC Results Jan-Jun 2007:Big Declines In Men’s Sector).

Bruce Sandell, MD of the consumer division at Dennis Publishing, said: “Derek has done a great job on Maxim. Under his editorship the magazine has been redesigned, a great team has been put in place and Maxim‘s performance is in line or in some cases much better than its competitors. Print sales may be down but the Maxim brand is growing and reaches more men than ever before.

“Over the next six months the print product will be developed, the current direction and content of the magazine will be evaluated. The dynamics of our business are constantly changing and to stay ahead of our competitors we will continue to evolve. Derek has decided to hand this next phase of Maxim‘s development to someone else. He leaves it in good shape, we wish him every success for the future and we intend to work together again on other projects. We expect to announce his successor very soon”
