The Independent is to relaunch its website with a raft of new features including improved search and navigation, according to a report.
The new-look Independent.co.uk website had been planned for Wednesday, said a report on MediaGuardian.co.uk, but technical difficulties mean that it may now launch after Christmas.
Initially, the site will be a basic version of the planned full upgrade with improved search and navigation, as well as tools to show more pictures and video.
The report quotes the Independent‘s multimedia editor Ruth Metzstein as saying: “We really just want to improve what we’ve got. There are no pictures, no multimedia and it’s not what you expect from a newspaper website.
“We’ll also be putting all the content from the newspaper online rather than most of it. But the first thing is to make it work better.”
Metzstein added that the Independent had launched a trial of 15 blogs two months ago which covered politics, travel, the environment and fashion.
The latest ABC figures show that the print copy of the Independent saw its circulation fall by 8% year on year, leaving it with a total of more than 233,400 (see ABC National Newspaper Round-Up: November 2007).
