Facebook To Roll-Out Non-English Language Sites

Facebook is set to roll-out non-English language versions of its social networking site in the coming weeks as part of an ambitious overseas expansion strategy in 2008.

The move is designed to generate user uptake across Europe and other markets including Australasia.

Blake Chandlee, commercial director at Facebook, told mad.co.uk that the site hopes to further expand the platform outside the US within the next 90 days, opening the service up to more international advertisers.

He said users will be given even more control over what information could be shared with other users.

Facebook has 64 million users worldwide and more than two million in London alone. While the uptake in countries outside the US and UK has been slow, Chandlee said that advertising in these markets would not help recruit new users.

He said: “Facebook will never move away from its word-of-mouth marketing strategy. Although, you can never say never, if you look at the amount of users the site has attracted in the past four years since launch, we are still attracting 600,000 to 700,000 new users every month, proving our strategy of viral marketing works.”
