EU Ministers Debate Telecoms Regulations

European Union ministers are debating a plan to harmonise the telecommunications industry and officials say they are unwilling to hand over national decisions to the EU HQ. The commission will instead have two months in which to object to any plans it believes will be in violation of EU law.

Ministers also rejected Commission’s recommendation that it would be inappropriate for the industry to function under existing competition law and decided that new definitions specific to telecoms be introduced.

Some concerns were raised about the possibility of mobile telecom operators operating against the interests of consumers by initiating price rises through their dominance of the market.

The package will face a second reading in the European Parliament this summer.
