Branson Could Buy Virgin Radio

Sir Richard Branson has said that he might consider buying back Virgin Radio, which he sold to Chris Evans in 1997.

Branson was taking part in the Big Listen live debate on the future of commercial radio which took place last night.

He said: “It’s certainly a possibility. It’s not something which we’re looking into immediately but we had some exciting days when Chris Evans was involved. And it has perhaps lost some of the gloss that it had once… We’re always interested in new challenges.”

Produced by LBC, the two hour show was hosted by Toby Anstis and looked at the development of commercial radio over the last 33 years. Guests included Tony Blackburn, Richard Park, Scott Mills, Simon Bates and Nick Ferrari.

The Big Listen initiative was carried out by YouGov on behalf of RadioCentre, the body which represents UK Commercial Radio.

In April, Branson was named as one of the favourites to buy Virgin Radio following SMG’s decision to float it on the stock market (see Branson Could Bid For Virgin Radio).
