Economist Group records 26% increase in operating profit

The Economist Group has recorded a 26% increase in operating profit to £56 million in the year ending March 31 2009.

The group also recorded a 17% increase in revenue, to £ 313 million. Ad revenues in Continental Europe and Middle East and Africa were very strong, it said, with MEA increasing 39%.

UK revenues hit £57.2 million, up from £53.7 million the previous year. UK operating profit rose from £13.6 million to £14.97 million.

There was also good news online, with ad revenues at online property economist.com up 29%, while page views were up 53%.

Andrew Rashbass, chief executive, said: “These results demonstrate once again that great brands delivering real value to readers and advertisers thrive even when the economic cycle turns and when the structure of the industry is evolving in the way information and advertising are consumed and delivered.”

Chris Stibbs, finance director, said: “We’re pleased to report another strong performance that demonstrates the quality and relevance of our brands all around the world.

“Our readers, advertisers and other customers continue to choose our brands despite and in some ways because of the turbulence in our various markets.”
