Virgin Tops Web Radio Rankings

MeasureCast has announced internet radio audience size and demographic data for week ending 11 March 2002 revealing a combined total of 4,034,980 hours of programming for the top 10 web radio networks. 66,827 more hours than was streamed by this group of broadcasters during the previous week.

Five of the top 10 networks attracted larger audiences than they had done in the previous week and six networks recorded an increase in the total number of hours streamed to listeners. The 1,248 internet radio stations for which MeasureCast collect data streamed a combined total of 6,423,886 hours during the week of 11-17 March.

The Clear Channel Worldwide network was the top online radio network. Its 197 streaming AM and FM stations delivered 1,088,273 hours of programming over the internet, up from 1,031,402 hours the week before.

Virgin Radio won first place in the latest MeasureCast Top 25 by streaming 310,870 hours of programming. Jazz FM took second place, streaming 223,639 hours.

The MeasureCast Internet Radio Listening Index for the week beginning 11 March rose by 5%. Total time spent listening to streaming radio stations, as measured by MeasureCast, has increased 452% since January 2001. 19 stations in the MeasureCast Top 25 saw an increase in their total number of hours streamed and 20 stations attracted larger audiences.

76% of all listening occurred during traditional work hours, 5am – 5pm, in the US, 12% took place at the weekend. 30% of internet radio listeners were between the ages of 25-34. 57% were younger than 35, 28% were younger than 25, and 6% were older than 55.

69% of online radio listeners were men and the greatest number of listeners could be found in; Canada, Japan, Mexico, the UK and the US.
