Broadband To Reach 41% Of European Households By 2008

Research group, Strategy Analytics, expects the number of European households with broadband internet to reach 41% by 2008, according to eMarketer.

By the end of this year, broadband uptake in Europe is expected to reach 20% (33.5 million) of all households, with strong broadband markets such as Sweden, Switzerland and Belgium helping to spur growth on.

By 2008, these three countries are expected to account for 55-60% of all European households making high-speed internet connections. The UK, Germany and Italy are trailing behind the stronger markets; last year these countries accounted for only 13-15% of all broadband households.

eMarketer reports that Strategy Analytics said, broadband is entering the ‘third phase’ of evolution in this region, with multiple broadband services being the key to expansion.

A report last month from eMarketer said that Western Europe is at the forefront of transforming the worldwide internet sector, with 52.5 million households (116 million users) expected to have broadband access by the end of 2007; this is up from 20 million homes (32 million users) in 2003 (see Global Broadband Subscribers To Hit 250 Million By 2007).
