HDTV To Dominate TV Sales By 2010

A new study by JupiterResearch has forecast massive growth for high definition TV (HDTV) viewing, with HDTV purchases set to constitute 70% of TV sales in the US by the end of the decade.

The figures are a massive increase on current levels, with the next generation equipment accounting for 21% of all television sales at the end of 2004.

Jupiter’s U.S. HDTV Forecast 2005 to 2010 projects 63% of American households will own a high definition screen by 2010, with the increased availability of HD content, as well as increased availability of the required equipment in retail stores, expected to boost uptake.

The new figures reinforce those of other researchers, also predicting large growth for HDTV in the next five years. According to Informa Telecoms & Media, 28.6 million high-definition television sets will be in homes worldwide by the end of 2005, increasing to a massive 106.2 million by 2010 (see HDTV To Reach 106.2 Million By 2010).

HDTV was found to be one of the six main areas of innovation within television technology at the MediaTel INSIGHT TV Technology Seminar, held earlier this month in association with MediaGuardian. Along with personal video recorders (PVRs), video on demand (VoD), interactive TV (iTV), internet protocol TV (IPTV) and mobile TV, HDTV was seen as of growing importance in the digital arena (see Emerging Technologies In The TV Marketplace).
