Iceland Leads With Broadband Penetration

Iceland has the highest concentration of broadband users, with the technology increasing its presence globally, particularly in South Korea, the Netherlands and Denmark.

Despite this strong growth, the US still has the most broadband users, with new research from the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development finding it has more than 49 million users.

Overall broadband subscriptions in the OECD countries jumped from 136 million to 158 million in the six months to December 2005, with the rate of people taking up broadband at 15%.

Digital subscriber lines (DSL) continued to be the leading platform in 28 countries, however cable subscribers still outnumber DSL in Canada and the United States.

Earlier figures from Point Topic claim that South Korea is coming to the end of its broadband reign, with Denmark and the Netherlands close to catching up in terms of broadband lines per 100 population (see South Korea Predicted To Lose Broadband Crown).

Despite showing negligible broadband growth in 2005, South Korea still has over 25% penetration of broadband by population. Denmark and the Netherlands are only a fraction of a percent behind, with Hong Kong and Finland following closely with a 23% penetration level.

Broadband connections in the UK continue to rise. The latest figures from the Office of National Statistics reveal that broadband has increased its market share, making up 64.2% of all connections in December 2005, up from 62.3% in November 2005 (see Internet Subscribtions Facing A Lull).
