Online Data Lifts Lid On Worldwide Internet Audience

New research from internet specialist comScore has revealed the amount of people aged 15 and above using the internet worldwide has reached 694 million.

The new figures were released at the launch of comScore World Metrix and represent 14 percent of the world’s total population in this age group.

Peter Daboll, president and CEO of comScore Media Metrix, explained the massive uptake in online technology around the globe, stating: “Today, the online audience in the U.S. represents less than a quarter of Internet users across the globe, versus ten years ago when it accounted for two-thirds of the global audience.”

In addition, comScore’s data excludes that from public computers in internet cafes and access from mobile phones or PDAs, giving a true reflection of ‘real’ internet users.

The new data also includes statistics on the top 15 countries by average hours online. According to comScore, Israel leads the worldwide table of internet use, with the average user spending 57.5 hours online each month. This figure is twice as high as the average US citizen, which failed to reach the top 15 countries.

ComScore also reports the top 15 online media properties worldwide, stating that Microsoft’s MSN websites are the most popular, with 538.6 million users around the world.

Yahoo’s sites led the way in terms of page views however, with 137.2 billion page views during March.

Daboll explained that “wWhile the ‘big three’ properties remain consistent among worldwide and U.S. audiences, Wikipedia has emerged as a site that continues to increase in popularity, both globally and in the U.S.”
