16 Million European Homes To Adopt Broadband In 2006

During 2006 another 16 million homes will be added to the 18 million which adopted the service in 2005, according to a new report from Strategy Analytics.

The report says that if this does occur then the total base of European residential subscribers will be brought up to 73.2 million.

Strategy Analytics also forecasts that by 2010 the number of residential broadband customers in Western Europe will reach 108 million, or 63% of all households in the region.

The report says that advanced broadband services will be most successful in leading markets such as the Nordic region, although adoption rates will suffer from limited competition and low PC adoption in countries such as Germany and Italy which are not considered to be as broadband aware as some other countries.

Research released by Motorola at the beginning of the month revealed that the UK lags behind the rest of Europe in broadband application awareness and adoption (see UK Lags Behind Rest Of Europe In Broadband Awareness And Adoption.).

Outside of Europe, recent research from Leichtman Research Group (LRG) said that by the end of 2010 there will be over 105 million residential online subscribers in the US, with over 80% subscribing to broadband (see Over 105 Million US Residential Online Subscribers By 2010).

The Strategy Analytics report covers 16 countries and makes predictions for the four year period from 2006 to 2010.
