US IPTV Subscribers To Reach 8.7 Million By 2010

IPTV will grow its US subscriber base from 300,000 to 8.7 million by 2010, according to a new report from eMarketer.

However, the report also says that the potential number of subscribers in IPTV capable households could top 50 million.

The report makes clear that IPTV has the potential to disrupt US cable and internet business models, as well as the preferences of the people the service is provided to.

Ben Macklin, senior analyst and author of the report said that, although the revenue potential for IPTV as a stand-alone product is limited: “as part of a bundle of services, which includes broadband and fixed and mobile voice, the value of IPTV will be in its ability to reduce churn and to perhaps recoup some revenue lost to cable companies offering voice services.”

According to a recent report from iSuppli Corp.the worldwide subscriber base for internet protocol television (IPTV) services is expected to expand by a factor of more than 26 from 2005 to 2010 (see IPTV Subscriber Base Set To Grow).

Away from the US, a report from In-Stat forecast that by 2011, the Asia/Pacific market will reach 39 million IPTV subscribers, while total IPTV revenue in the region will reach US$8.1 billion by the same year (see IPTV To Reach 34 million Subscribers In Asia/Pacific By 2011).
