Global Demand For Set-Top Boxes Set To Rise

The global demand for set-top boxes is expected to reach an annual 120 million units by 2011, according to new research from Understanding & Solutions.

Understanding & Solutions predicts that the market will be sustained by the maturing digital satellite market and the cable sector that, which will be driven by the conversion of analogue customers. It adds that the growth of IPTV services is also a major factor.

Andrew Carroll, Understanding & Solutions consultant, said: “The growth of online TV and video is both threat and opportunity to the STB industry.

“Broadband may possibly impact the need for dedicated digital TV infrastructure long term, but, for the next 2-3 years at least, subscription Service Providers actually see the STB as a way to network and integrate broadcast and IP services into one seamless ‘any content, any screen’ proposition for customers.”

Recent research from Strategy Analytics said that most HDTV buyers are predicted to also purchase a high-definition set-top box, disc player, games console or digital media player (see European Sales Of HDTV Devices To Reach 28.1 Million Units).

Meanwhile, ABI Research said that consumers in the Asia-Pacific region will increasingly opt for higher-end set-top boxes that support personal video recorder (PVR) and high-definition features (see Asia-Pacific Set For Growth In High-End Set Top Boxes).
