INSIGHTanalysis: Media Healthcheck – June 2007

Online was a big theme in June, and the month began with the news that the UK has the most active online population in Europe, with the highest average number of daily visitors (21.8 million).

The research, from comScore, showed that the UK also has the highest usage days per month (21 per user), and the highest average time spent per month per user (34.4 hours) in Europe (see UK Has Most Active Online Population In Europe).

In separate research, comScore revealed that 80% of the UK online population (aged 15 or older who have accessed the internet from either a home or a work computer), initiated a video stream in April 2007, compared to 76% in the US, 79% in France, and 70% in Germany.

According to comScore, UK streamers allocated 10% of their total time online to viewing video (see UK Internet Users Leading Consumers Of Online Video).

Meanwhile, the European Interactive Advertising Association revealed that 62% of women with children aged between 0-18 years old now regularly access the internet across Europe – a growth of 9% since 2005.

According to the Digital Mums report, 70% of mothers who use all media find that the internet provides what they want quickly and saves them time, and 46% state that the internet helps keep them ahead of the game (see European Mothers Increase Web Usage).

June also saw the publication of a report from IAB Europe which said that online advertising spend in Europe doubled last year to £4.5 billion.

The UK accounted for 39% of the total (€3.101 billion), Germany for 22% (€1.752 billion) and France 15% (€1,179 billion) (see European Internet Adspend Doubled In 2006).

In the US, internet advertising revenues reached a new record of $4.9 billion for the first quarter of 2007, according to the Interactive Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (see US Internet Advertising Revenues Reach Record $4.9 Billion).

The 2007 first quarter revenues represent a 26% increase over Q1 2006 at $3.8 billion and a 2% increase over Q4 2006 at $4.8 billion.

According to Leichtman Research Group (LRG), 53% of all US households now subscribe to a broadband high-speed internet service at home, with broadband services now accounting for about 72% of all home internet subscriptions, compared to 60% last year.

LRG added that the total number of broadband subscribers will increase by over 40 million over the next five years (see Over Half Of US Households Subscribe To Broadband).

Finally, Point Topic’s Global Broadband Statistics service revealed that there were 298 million broadband subscribers worldwide at the end of March 2007.

The regional data showed that Eastern Europe was continuing to grow strongly, and was the only region to record more than 10% growth in the quarter (see Worldwide Broadband Subscribers Reach 298 Million).
