Nearly Half Of US Adults Have Broadband At Home

Nearly half (47%) of all adult Americans now have a high-speed internet connection at home, according to new research from the Pew Internet & American Life Project.

Among individuals who use the internet at home, 70% have a high-speed connection while 23% use dialup.

The number of Americans with broadband grew 12% from 2006 to 2007, down from the 40% increase from 2005 to 2006.

John B Horrigan, associate director of research at Pew and author of the report, said: “The moderate growth in home high-speed adoption from 2006 to 2007 is partly a reflection of strong prior-year growth; the low-hanging fruit was picked in 2005.

“Luring remaining hard-to-get adults to home broadband is likely to involve showing them the relevance of online content.”

Research from Leichtman Research Group meanwhile, said that that 53% of all US households now subscribe to a broadband high-speed internet service at home (see Over Half Of US Households Subscribe To Broadband).

Point Topic’s Global Broadband Statistics service recently revealed that there were 298 million broadband subscribers worldwide at the end of March 2007 (see Worldwide Broadband Subscribers Reach 298 Million).
