European Broadband Market Adds 5m New Subscriptions

The overall European Broadband market added five million new subscriptions in the third quarter of 2007, representing a sequential growth rate of 6%, according to a new report from Strategy Analytics.

This growth rate has been essentially maintained in each of the last four quarters, implying 29% year-over-year growth, said Strategy Analytics.

France Telecom continues to lead the European market, and commanded an estimated 12% overall European market share.

Noteworthy in the third quarter was France Telecom’s 911,000 new subs, largely attributable to the acquisition and integration of Spanish broadband provider Ya.com. Ya was one of several “non-core” assets put up for sale by Deutsche Telekom in 2007.

Number two Deutsche Telekom gained 500,000 new subscribers in the third quarter, fuelled by aggressive “multi-play” marketing campaigns.

The Strategy Analytics report summarizes quarterly subscriber growth trends for 75 major broadband service providers (BSPs) operating across Europe.

In the third quarter of 2007, these BSPs serviced 84 million customers – an increase of 21.6 million subscribers from the same quarter in 2006. Together, these BSPs represented 91% of the total European market.

A report from Point Topic found that by the end of the third quarter of 2007 there were 328.8 million broadband subscribers worldwide, equating to an increase of 4.72% in the quarter (see 328.8m Broadband Subscribers Worldwide).

Meanwhile, Forrester Research said that there is still huge potential for growth in Western European residential broadband adoption, despite a slowdown in the majority of national markets (see Potential For Growth In European Broadband Adoption).

Forrester predicts 44% household penetration at the end of 2007 and forecasts a rise to 71% by the end of 2013.
