Mobile Entertainment Revenues To Reach $47.5bn By 2010

The combination of greater 3G adoption and a marked increase in rich media, made-for-mobile content will drive mobile entertainment revenues to $47.5 billion by 2010, according to a new report from Juniper Research.

However, the Juniper report cautions that entertainment service adoption will be retarded unless improvements are made in areas such as the user interface, network coverage and the excessive cost of data services.

It also notes that in some mobile areas – such as gambling, adult content and some social networking services – national and international legislation could either adversely impact on growth, or in some cases prevent any service deployment.

Dr Windsor Holden, report author, said: “Traditionally, services such as ringtones and wallpapers accounted for the bulk of mobile entertainment services.

“However, usage patterns are changing rapidly with the increasing availability of more sophisticated and attractive content such as streamed and broadcast video, social networking services and multiplayer games, which have been designed specifically for the mobile environment.”

Additionally the Juniper report finds that the China and Far East region currently provides the largest market for Mobile Entertainment services and contributes around 41% of global revenues.

Despite rapid growth in developing markets, the Asia Pacific region is forecast to retain its leadership through to 2012, when it will still contribute 33% of global revenues.

A recent report from TNS Global Technology found that music applications are the fastest growing services on mobiles, according to a new report from TNS Global Technology.

The Global Telecoms Insight study, which interviewed 16,000 respondents across 29 countries, found in the last year that the use of MP3 players on mobile phones has risen by 78% and the use of radio via mobile by a massive 140% (see Music Applications Are Fastest Growing Services On Mobiles).

In February, a report from Understanding & Solutions suggested that by 2010, annual mobile handset shipments will have increased by almost 25%, reaching a figure in excess of 1.4 billion units worldwide (see Mobile Handset Shipments To Increase Almost 25%).

Last year, over 1.1 billion units were shipped globally, with the majority of growth coming from emerging markets, particularly India and Africa, where the upsurge was pegged at more than 20%.
