US DVR subscriber households to hit 51.1m by 2014

Magna has released its latest US on-demand forecast, predicting that US DVR subscriber households will hit 51.1 million (42% of TV households) by the end of 2014.

This figures is an increase on the 31 million (27% of US TV households) as of the end of the first quarter of 2009.

Magna also estimates that 71.0 million households had broadband access as of the end of the first quarter of 2009, 60% of the country’s 118 million households. It expects that total broadband access will rise to cover 87.4 million households by the end of 2014.

Leichtman Research Group recently revealed that the twenty largest cable and telephone providers in the US – representing about 94% of the market – acquired over 1.6 million net additional high-speed internet subscribers in the first quarter of 2009 (see 1.6m Americans add broadband in the first quarter of 2009).

Globally, broadband information service Point Topic increased its forecast for the number of fixed broadband lines in the world by the end of 2009 from 493 million to 496 million (see Global broadband lines to reach 496m by end of 2009).

By 2014, Magna expects that video-on-demand to reach 66.6 million US households (approximately 64% of television households). This compares with 43.1 million US VOD households (42% of total TV households) at the end of the first quarter of 2009.
